Wild Things Live to Play Another Day
by Eric Gendron, Daily Weston
12 August 2010

While one championship was being decided at North Side Field, two teams were playing for their postseason lives at the Onion Barn in the Weston women's softball league playoffs. The Wild Things and the New Kids on the Block were locked in a back-and-forth struggle that needed extra frames to decide who would be going home.

Two outs from being eliminated, Kim Granite came through for the Wild Things with a two-run home run to tie the game at six and send it into extra innings. The New Kids threatened to end the game in the bottom of the eighth, but a controversial call over what was ruled an illegal swing ended the inning. Both managers argued the call for several minutes before umpires sorted it out. The Wild Things took advantage of the momentum swing, scoring three runs in the top of the ninth. They held off a bases-loaded threat from the New Kids and won 9-7. New Kids on the Block are eliminated from the playoffs.

The Wild Things will take on the 20-30-40 Somethings in the loser's bracket final at 6:15 p.m. Thursday at the (NOTE:  NORTH HOUSE - report here in error) Onion Barn. The winner of that game will play Peter's Spirits in the league championship Tuesday.

A FANTASTIC WIN  TUESDAY AUGUST 1O IN PLAY-OFFS - we heard about it at the W.I.S., as we were preparing to be the AP reporter for election night in the Primaries -  a member of the Weed Wackers came in to vote and said WILD THINGS were awesome tonight!!!

Wild Things Slug Out Wild Win
by Eric Gendron, The Daily Weston
4 Aug.  2010

On the final day of the regular season, the Wild Things of the Weston women's softball league had some unfinished business to address. With the second seed in the playoffs on the line, the Wild Things held off a strong comeback from the Weed Whackers to win 8-6.

Stacey Rubenstein and Tammy Link sparked the Wild Things offense with RBI singles and fantastic defense at shortstop and second base, respectively. The Weed Whackers came storming back with two runs in the fourth on big hits from Meg Brooks and Chanell Meijer. The game did not stay tied for long when the Wild Things re-took the lead with a solo home run by Jenny Burke. Burke also ended the game with a fantastic leaping catch in foul territory.

With the win, the Wild Things will get a first-round bye in the six-team playoffs. The 20-30-40 Somethings are the top-ranked team. The Weed Whackers will take on the New Kids on the Block, while Peter's Spirits takes on 2K+C tomorrow evening in the first round.

"This league has been playing for over 22 years and it's a great way for women in Weston to really enjoy a team experience," Lisa Brodlie, captain of the Wild Things, said. "It's a lot of fun."

...Wild Things 16, 2K+C 0

The bats would do the talking for the Wild Things in their game against 2K+C last week.

Every turn at bat would be a productive one for the former, who scored at least a pair of runs in each inning. By the time they were done it was a 16-0 win in a contest that was stopped after five innings due to the 15-run rule, on Thursday, July 15.

Jenny Burke and Jess Granite got the offense started for the Wild Things, each reaching base before a hit by Kim Granite helped make it 2-0. Most of the damage, however, came in the next frame.

Barbara Fucigna and Pat Kerch each drew walks. Jenn Cirino, Louise Truax, Sue Baird. Lisa Brodlie, Burke, Jess Granite, Stacey Rubenstein, Kim Granite and Jamie Granite all followed with hits for five runs.

Kerch and Cirino scored the Wild Things’ two runs in the third for an 11-0 advantage. More hits followed in the fourth as Kim Granite, Jamie Granite, Lynne Smith and Fucigna scored runs.

For their last turn Brodlie, Burke and Jess Granite made it official, each crossing home plate as the score was 16-0.

Kim Granite had four hits for the Wild Things. Burke, Rubenstein, Fucigna, Kerch, Cirino, Baird and Brodlie had three each. Fucigna also pitched, throwing a shutout.

Wild Things 11, Peter’s Spirits 7

The hitting was more subdued for the Wild Things a day earlier when they faced Peter’s Spirits. They still managed one big inning offensively, overcoming a three-run deficit for an 11-7 win.

Peter’s Spirits jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with Gaines scoring for her team, only to have the Wild Things respond in their first turn with Burke and Jess Granite reaching base and later scoring. With two out in the top of the third, it appeared Peter’s Spirits would go quietly but they managed to rally with Mary Asphar, Amy Mirchandani, Gaines and Hermione Gluck all scoring. Saltzman and Baisley added hits as their team took a 5-2 lead.

Burke scored to get one back for the Wild Things in the bottom of the frame before she added a homer in the fourth as part of a five-run effort to turn the tables on their opponents. Now up 8-5, they added another run in the fifth and capped off the scoring in the sixth with their last two.

Peter’s Spirits threatened in the top of the seventh with Platek and Mannion scoring runs before the side was retired.

Burke had four hits for the Wild Things. Truax, Kim Granite, Jamie Granite and Baird had three each.

For Peter’s Spirits, Gaines and Mannion had three hits apiece.

Women's softball: Wild Things take top seed

The rematch was a lot better than the first encounter when the Wild Things played back-to-back games against 20-30-40-Something.

While the Wild Things did get a few hits they did not string together many of them. On the other hand, 20-30-40-Something did a better job of bringing its baserunners home for a 10-4 win last Thursday, July 30, in the Weston Women’s Softball League.

Besides keeping the competition off the scoreboard for the first two innings 20-30-40-Something got the hits it needed during that stretch. It also took advantage of a few walks issued by the other side to take a 6-0 lead.

The Wild Things cut the gap a bit in the top of the third when hits by Tammy Weis and Jenn Arlsan gave them runners on board with two outs. Louise Truax and Jessica Granite got hits to drive them in to make it 5-2.

That was as close as the score got as 20-30-40-Something took advantage of three straight walks in the bottom of the frame for another three runs. It added another in the fourth when Deb Gianelli singled and later scored.

Hits by Delana Lustberg and Pat Kerch helped drive in the Wild Things’ last two runs in the sixth.

Gianelli and Sandy Bucaro had two hits for 20-30-40-Something. For the Wild Things, Truax had four with Kerch and Lustberg getting two apiece.

A rematch between the two sides on Monday would determine who got the top seed in the upcoming playoffs. Despite missing a few players due to injuries, the Wild Things rallied in time for a 16-10 win to get the top spot.

At first the Wild Things found themselves in quite a hole when 20-30-40-Something sent 14 batters to the plate, scoring nine runs. It was still early and the Wild Things had enough time to respond.

They first showed signs of life in the fourth. Jess Kerch and Diane DiNapoli walked while Joyce Kellogg singled. All three would score to make it 9-3.

The big rally came in the fifth with the Wild Things plating eight runs. While 20-30-40-Something got one back in the bottom of the inning the Wild Things padded their lead in the sixth with three more runs and scored their last two in the seventh.

Lustberg had three hits for the Wild Things. Kerch had two, as did Kellogg and Kim Granite.

The playoffs begin this week.

Women's softball: Wild things win rematch
Weston FORUM (online edition)

With one big win already to its credit, Peter’s Spirits was hoping for a repeat performance in its most recent encounter with the Wild Things.

Having won an earlier encounter against the same opponent, Peter’s Spirits was definitely up for the game on Monday. While it did give the defending champs a game, it could not make up the deficit in a 10-8 loss in Weston Women’s Softball League action.

Determined not to get the same result as the last time, the Wild Things came out swinging in the first inning. Jessica Granite, Joyce Kellogg, Jamie Granite, Louise Truax, and Diane DiNapoli all had hits and scored as the Wild Things jumped out to a 5-0 lead.

Peter’s Spirits cut the deficit a bit in its first turn with Amy Marchandani and Kathleen O’Connell each getting hits and later scoring. The two sides exchanged runs in the second before the Wild Things widened the gap a bit in the fourth with Jessica Granite and Kellogg again scoring runs to make it 8-3.

Not out of it, Peter’s Spirits threatened with three runs in the fifth. Lauren Abrams singled and Marchandani walked before O’Connell came up with a two-run triple. She in turn would also score as the gap was cut to 8-6.

The Wild Things gave themselves more breathing room in the sixth when Jessica Granite and Truax singled and scored. Down 10-6, Peter’s Spirits came up with its last two runs when Julie Baisley and Marchandani reached base and scored in the bottom of the seventh.

Jessica Granite had five hits for the Wild Things and scored four runs. Tammy Weis had three hits, as did Kellogg, who also had two runs scored. Truax had two hits with two runs scored.

For Peter’s Spirits, Marchandani had two hits and three runs scored. O’Connell added two hits and two runs scored. Karen Constant and Tina Gaines each had two hits as well.

Both teams finish the regular season this week before beginning the playoffs next week.

Wild Things win league title
Weston FORUM
Written by Rocco Valluzzo
Thursday, August 28, 2008

The momentum the Wild Things took into the Weston Women’s Softball League playoffs continued right up until the very end.

The Wild Things, who won their first three contests, were not about to slow down when they faced the Weedwackers for the championship last week. As was the case in a couple of their previous contests, they used a big offensive inning or two to get the job done, dethroning the defending champs 14-3 last Tuesday, Aug. 19, in a rematch of last season’s title game.

The win marked the Wild Things’ first league championship since 2003 and ninth overall since their start in 1988.

Threatening to score in the bottom of the first, the Wild Things came out swinging. Joyce Kellogg, Jessica Granite and Stacey Rubenstein all had hits but could not score before the Weedwackers got out of the jam.

The former took a brief lead in the top of the second. Hits by Kay Spencer, Karen McMahon, Amy Sanborn and Sandi Guinane helped bring in two runs.

The Wild Things, however, were quick to respond in a big way. In the bottom of the third they plated nine runs as Kellogg (two runs), Jessica Granite, Rubenstein, Louise Truax, Tammy Weis, Diane DiNapoli, Jamie Granite and Lisa Brodlie all got hits and scored as the Wild Things sent 14 batters to the plate for nine runs.

Werner scored what would be the Weedwackers’ final run in the fourth and the Wild Things answered with one of their own in their half of the inning when DiNapoli came home on a hit by Jamie Granite. Now up 10-2, the Wild Things iced the game for all intents and purposes by scoring four runs in the sixth courtesy of Jen Arslan, Kellogg, Jessica Granite and Rubenstein.

Kellogg had five hits (including a double) and scored three runs for the Wild Things. Jessica Granite also had five hits and scored twice. DiNapoli (three hits) also scored two runs, as did Rubenstein, who had four hits.

Truax (three hits), Weis, Jamie Granite (three hits) and Brodlie (three hits) also scored one run apiece.

For the Weedwackers, Megan Brooks, Kay Spencer, Bev Bonfoey and McMahon each had two hits and Werner scored two runs.

Wild Things, Weedwackers to play for league crown
Weston FORUM
Friday, August 22, 2008

Tight defense on the part of the Wild Things kept their opponent’s scoring to a minimum in the second round of the Weston Women’s Softball League  playoffs.

While the Weed Wackers did manage a number of hits they had trouble getting them in succession. In between them the Wild Things made the plays they needed to hold off the number one seed 4-1 last Tuesday, Aug. 12.

Both sides had difficulty generating offense for the first few innings. They got a few runners aboard in the bottom of the first but left them stranded.

The Wild Things finally rallied in the bottom of the fourth. Stacey Rubenstein and Louise Truax singled to get things started but when the Weed Wackers record two outs it looked like they might get out of the inning without any additional damage.

However, hits by Tammy Weis and Lisa Brodie helped get their team on the board. They later scored as well thanks to hits by Diane DiNapoli and Delana Lustberg for a 4-0 lead.

The Weed Wackers avoided the shutout in the top of the fifth. Karen McMahon led off with a hit and later scored on Sandi Guinane’s single for the team’s only run.

Rubenstein had three hits for the Wild Things. Kim Granite had two, as did Weis. Jenny Burke walked twice and had one hit.

For the Weed Wackers, Guinane had three hits, as did Marci Schaffer.

Both sides will meet again this week in the finals. The Wild Things will need to win once for the championship while the Weed Wackers must win twice.

Wild Things advance
Weston FORUM
Thursday, August 21, 2008

The Weston Women’s Softball League playoffs marked a whole new game for the Wild Things against 20-30-40-something.

During the regular season the Wild Things had lost their two most recent encounters to the same opponent. The tide would eventually turn in their favor for the first round of the playoffs last week.

A big offensive inning in particular helped, but the Wild Things added a few more runs to their total later on in a 10-2 win on Tuesday, Aug. 5.  Most of the offense they needed came in the bottom of the third inning. Sue Schaefer and Jen Arslan drew walks before coming around to score their team’s first two runs. The Wild Things then strung a few hits together that brought in Jessica Granite, Stacey Rubenstein and Louise Truax. Joyce Kellogg and Kim Granite also had hits in the rally as the Wild Things went up 5-0.

Cutting the deficit a bit, 20-30-40-something also drew consecutive walks in its half of the fourth frame, eventually bringing both runners home. But that was all it could muster for the rest of the way.

Lisa Brodlie and Renee LaPoint drew consecutive walks in the bottom of the fourth and eventually scored. Jenny Burke’s hit and a sacrifice fly by Jessica Granite made it a 7-0 game.

The Wild Things got those runs back plus another in the fifth with the help of three straight hits by Truax, Kellogg and Kim Granite, all of whom eventually scored.

Kellogg and Kim Granite each had three hits for the Wild Things. Jessica Granite had two hits, as did Truax, who also scored twice. Arslan had two walks.

The playoffs continue this week.

Wild Things cut first lead, not second

Weston FORUM
Thursday, July 31, 2008

Climbing out of a hole for the second time was beyond the reach of the Wild Things in their game against 20-30-40-something last week.

Despite facing a huge deficit early on, the Wild Things clawed their way back as the action continued and were in a good position to make a move to win it. But when 20-30-40-something responded with a second rally, it held the lead this time for a 13-9 win in extra innings on Tuesday, July 22.

It was the third straight win for 20-30-40-Something, which also defeated the previously unbeaten Weed Wackers a week earlier.

A strong first inning put 20-30-40-Something in seemingly good shape as the first four batters reached base. Not only did Linda Filsinger, Peg Mendoza, Kerri McInnis and Kelli McInnis score, the visitors tacked on five more runs in the frame, batting through the order for a 9-0 advantage while still in the first inning.

Despite facing an uphill battle, the Wild Things answered quickly in their first turn. Jenny Burke, Jenn Arslan and Jessica Granite all scored, as did Kim Granite and Joyce Kellogg, who hit back-to-back doubles to help their team cut the lead to 9-5.

The Wild Things managed to keep their opponents from scoring until the last innings. In the meantime they chopped away at the lead with runs by Burke and Louise Truax in the second inning. Jessica Granite scored in the fifth and, with Diane DiNapoli doing likewise in the sixth, they had turned what had started as a 9-0 deficit into a 9-9 tie.

With neither side scoring in the seventh, the contest went into extra innings. It was then that 20-30-40-Something’s bat, after remaining relatively quiet after the first inning, came to life again. Mendoza, Kelli McInnis came into score and two more runs followed after that. This time the Wild Things could not respond.

Kelli McInnis had hour hits and scored two runs for 20-30-40-Something. Nina Williams had four hits as well.

For the Wild Things, Burke had four hits and scored two runs. Jessica Granite score two runs as well and had two hits.

Both teams end the regular season today (Thursday) and start the playoffs next week.

Weed Wackers respond in time
Weston FORUM
Thursday, July 24, 2008

A slim lead did not quite hold up for the Wild Things late in the action against the Weed Wackers last week.

Breaking a tie in the last inning, the Wild Things were poised to take the win if they could survive the bottom half of the frame. The Weed Wackers had other ideas, however, finally getting the offense they needed to pull off a 4-3 come-from-behind win on Tuesday, July 15.

A run by the Weed Wackers in the bottom of the first was the only scoring by either team for the first three innings. The Wild Things would tie it in the top of the fourth when hits by Joyce Kellogg and Kim Granite helped to score Jessica Granite and make it a 1-1 game.

It stayed a tie until the top of the seventh when Kellogg scored the go-ahead run and Kim Granite followed with an insurance run to put the Wild Things in seemingly good shape. Down to their last turn, the Weed Wackers would not waste it, scoring three runs for the win.

Kellogg, Kim Granite, Sue Schaefer and Tammy Weis each had two hits for the Wild Things.

The lead was easier for the Wild Things to protect when they took on Peter’s Spirits two days later. It only got larger as the game continued, ending in a 13-3 win.

The Wild Things went up for good in the top of the first when hits by Kellogg and Louise Truax helped drive in Jenn Arslan and Jessica Granite. The lead grew to 5-0 in the next frame when Schaefer, Jamie Granite and Weis all scored.

Peter’s Spirits got one back in the second but the Wild Things added three more in the third plus two each in the fourth and fifth innings. Defensively, they held the competition to just two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, bringing the score to 11-3 and scored another two in the seventh to ice the game.

Jessica Granite, Kellogg, Truax and Schaefer had three hits for the Wild Things.

Wild Things win two

Weston FORUM
Thursday, July 17, 2008

Most of the innings were indeed productive ones for the Wild Things in their game against Peter’s Spirits last week.  As opposed to using one big at-bat to get the job done the Wild Things put runs on the board a bit at time. It was not long until they had built a comfortable lead, which they protected for a 10-4 win on Tuesday, July 8.

Hits by Tammy Weis and Renee LaPoint helped give the Wild Things a 2-0 advantage in the first inning and they added another run in the next frame.  Jessica Granite, Stacey Rubenstein and Weis all scored runs in the third, and LaPoint and Joyce Kellogg also had hits in that frame as the Wild Things were up 6-0.

Peter’s Spirits got two back in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth only to have the Wild Things respond with a three-run rally in their next turn. Jenny Burke led off with a triple and scored on Jenn Arlsan’s hit. Jessica Granite followed with a two run homer to make it 9-3.

The Wild Things scored their final run in the seventh with Desiree Schmitt’s RBI single which brought in Arslan.  Granite had three hits for the Wild Things, who next faced 20-30-40-something two days later. Although not as productive offensively, they still had enough hitting for a 3-0 win.  All of their runs came in the fourth inning with Jessica Granite, Louise Truax and Kellogg all crossing the plate. Hits by Kim Granite and LaPoint also helped build the lead.

Tight defense helped shut down 20-30-40-something, which was also held to five hits by Wild Things pitcher Lisa Brodlie.  Arlsan had two hits for the Wild Things, which faces Peter’s Spirits today (Thursday) and 20-30-40-something on Tuesday.

EARLIER IN THE 2008 SEASON...
Teams make strides getting into shape, with new players gaining conditioning and experience;  the number of muscle strains, pulls and tears, etc. has not been calculated, but this year there seems to be a larger number than usual of EMT's, nurses and doctors playing slow pitch in Weston!!!

WILD THINGS NOTES:  Great pitching by Lisa and Jessica as we get to the half way point of the summer season;  big 3-0 win over 20-30-40 Somethings!!!

August 15th: the game that defines what it means to be a WILD THING...

What a game! It was so well played on both sides. We won the toss - always a good thing!

First inning:  two runs for both teams.

Third inning:  We then went to 3...

Fourth inning: they scored 4 in the fourth. However, in the bottom of the fourth we pulled ahead to 7.

They got it to 7-7 until, in extra innings, we broke through!

Bottom of the 9th inning: WE WON!

This game was spectacular in many ways: Stacey & Kim & Joyce made 2 double plays! The outfield outdid themselves - L to R - Judee, Jessica, Diane and Jamie/Jenn. Jamie made 2 spectacular catches; Joyce, at 2nd, was ever so casually picking up balls with her behind her side catches & Stacey snagged everything that came to her.

Tammy hit well & Kim just caught every throw to first- no matter where - Sue stayed firm behind the plate & had really good hits. Jenn belted a few out there while Louise did a splendid job coaching 3rd base.

Louise was also busy with her camera.

And lastly, our many thanks to Scottie, who meticulously keeps our scorebook & gets us into the line up at the right time.

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH WILD THINGS!!!  See you all tomorrow night!

(Edited) FROM THE DESK OF THE WILD-THING-IN-CHARGE

Jail Birds could not field a team for our last scheduled regular season game Tuesday, July 31, so our season is over...5 wins, 2 losses and one rainout...on to the play-offs.

(Edited) FROM THE DESK OF THE WILD-THING-IN-CHARGE:

Terrific game against 20-30-40!

First they were ahead, then we we went ahead, then they came back to go ahead by two and then we came back in the top of the seventh inning.  Judee pitched a beautiful game and closed them out in the bottom of the seventh.

Victory is so great in a tight game like that, with so many changes of fortune.  Wild Things prevailed!  Big at bats from Judee, Tammy, Kim, Joyce and Diane.  Super at bats - make them work!!!  Great A.B.s Delana, Sue and Jessica at shortstop.

We are now 4 wins, 2 losses and 1 rain out and Tuesday July 31 is the last regular season game.  Then comes the play-offs!

(Edited) FROM THE DESK OF THE WILD-THING-IN-CHARGE:

Weed Wackers Whack Wildthings - but we'll try to return the favor in the future!

(Edited) FROM THE DESK OF WILD-THING-IN-CHARGE:

The schedule and rain-outs have not made it possible for all teams to play enough games to meet deadline for rule about mandating that each player have a certain minimum number of games in which she has been on the roster and official game batting order.  After full debate of this and another issue--use of illegal equipment--it was the decision of Weston Rec that roster rule would be waived and no penalty would be imposed upon team using illegal bat in 20-30-40  game.  Thus Wild Things suffered first loss.  Our next game is Thursday...

RAIN?
If there is rain, check your computers - we will e mail you after 4pm, when the Rec office makes the decision "go" or "no go" - that is when the umpires have to be notified by Parks & Rec.

(Edited) FROM THE DESK OF THE WILD-THING-IN-CHARGE:

Well, it was surprising, but the humidity did not hinder Wild Things July 10, last night. It was actually pleasant (no kidding) on the field with a light breeze! Our hitting was good...but our fielding was the backbone of this victory.  The usual super work from the team!

Next up Thursday evening, July 12, against 20-30, this time on Field #2 - the FIRST softball field as  you enter the complex. This field gets hot and hotter.  It is not one iota in the shade.  BRING LOTS OF WATER.

RAIN?
If there is rain, check your computers - we will e mail you after 4pm, when the Rec office makes the decision "go" or "no go" - that is when the umpires have to be notified by Parks & Rec.

(Edited) FROM THE DESK OF THE WILD-THING-IN-CHARGE:

For those of you who could not be present for this first game against the always powerful and dangerous PETER'S SPIRITS, Wild Things had a great night.

Lots of good hitting & fielding, a home run & a bunch of triples...with some SMART BASE RUNNING.  Oh - and we won (22-5 in the 5th).

FIRST RULE IN WILD THINGS PLAY BOOK DURING THE SEASON:  Everyone played!  To paraphrase Martha Stewart, it was a good night.

ON DECK:  Next week we play on Tuesday against WEED WACKERS & then on Thursday against 20-30 SOMETHINGS.   Happy Fourth!

(Edited) FROM THE DESK OF THE WILD-THING-IN-CHARGE:

Well, we made it through our first game with a win, 7-6 (Jail Birds). Our next game will be next Tuesday night, July 3, at the same field - #4.

The length of the grass in the outfield (oh my, they actually have grass in the outfield this year) was too long. (Long grass invites snakes and Morehouse Farm Park is known, as a Devil's Den neighbor, to maybe be Copperhead territory.)  Hopefully, it will be taken care of by next week.

NOTE:  some players may never get a chance if intentional walks become accepted as appropriate in slow-pitch.  On Tuesday night please bring your favorite drink & any munchies you wish for after the game. The Prue Bliss Pavillion is next to the field, which makes for easy access (see above right).

See everyone on Tuesday!

After the playoff there was a party...
PLAY OFF STORY 2006:  Observations from the bench...

Wild Things 2006

Left to right, rear:  Sarah, Lisa, Mistie, Weaser,  Sue, Diane, skip 2 then Kim, then skip 2;  front row:  Stacey, Tammy, Delana (and her sliding instructor), Judee.

Wild Things FINISH SECOND IN WILTON '06!!!  Lisa's poem this year sings the paises of all Wild Things, new and old, and keeps us in suspense about games for next year...as in, Weston or Wilton?  Either way, 2006 was great fun, a victory over injuries, and a reflection on friendship.  See team photo

Well, the Wild Things did it again.

Wild Things beat Workflow 3-1 & it was so well played by Wild Things all along from the 1 run scored by Judee on Mistie's great 2 base hit to the 3rd inning where Kerrie & Judee scored, having gotten to base on their own good hits & scoring on a slam once again by Mistie that brought them both over the plate.

Wild Things continued their fine hitting streak; Workflow did manage to catch alot of those. Even fast running by Sarah & Delana & Stacey to 1st base could not always beat the throw.

Stacey's bullet of an arm with Louise snagging all throws at 1st base kept the infield tight, right behind Judee's superb pitching - she out thought them on every pitch, causing them to hit pop ups & when on the ground, managed to stop quite a few herself. Tammy had a dramatic catch as their one of their heavy hitters lined one in the air & the force of the ball was so hard that Tammy's catch was over her head & behind her neck - amazing!

The outfield saw little action - what did go out there was either caught or retrieved quickly - last night the infield handled the brunt of the defense.  And, a welcome back to Sarah; it was good to hear your voice wafting in from right center.

Next week Wild Things play Dreyfus - this is the final.

If we win, it goes to another week. Game time 6:30. EVERYONE INVITED TO BE THERE!

EARLIER...

The Wild Things were sensational the other night! It was a well played game & a pleasure to watch all of you doing such a great job  - & having fun! Lots of the usual laughs - which seemed to unnverve the opponents.

For those of you who could not be there, Wild Things were up first (we were seeded 3, so we were visitors), & racked up 6 runs just like that. Bats were good all evening, tallying 8 runs by the 4th inning. Tight playing in the field held Workflow down on runs until they had a burst in the 6th inning & got 3 runs.

Wild Things ended by being victorious at 8-7, clearly distressing the higher-seeded opposition. Good pitching by Judee, backed by a great defensive team  - Diane had some spectacular catches in the field along with a good one by Sue, & of course, the usual bullet throws by Stacey to 1st & some really athletic saves in the dirt by Louise at 1st base really helped.  Kerrie saw lots of action at 2nd as many runs were stopped there by throws to that base.

One of the hits of the evening was a surprising slide by Delana back to first base - coached by the sliding queen, Stacey - then Delana repeated it again - much to the delight of our team.

Next week we are playing the 1st place team - Louis Dreyfus - 6:30.pm game time. They won against Circus Man last night (earlier game) so we are next. This is a double elimination tournament so all of us keep playing even if there has been a loss.

REVIEW OF FIRST VICTORY UNDER THE LIGHTS IN WILTON:
Our first victory - a 12 - 0 win over, webmaster thinks, "Circus Man Ice Cream."  Team coming together, Tammy at short this game, everyone playing perfect "D" and pitching super...memories of games in the Weston league when everything clicked!  Maybe this game is the start of a revival of the Wild Things's winning ways!!!  A new league, new rules. (YES - you can leave the bag before the ball comes in contact with the bat!)

"PLAY BALL 2005"

When it was all over, no one got hurt during the season, and crisis management was the theme for this year...we managed it quite well, people are getting better and all is right with the world, again...we will be establishing a WILD THINGS farm team in Missoula, Montana this winter

2005 softball season for women was held at Morehouse Farm Park ONLY!
The schedule for all teams in the Weston Women's Slow-Pitch Softball, 2005 season, including details of who is the "home team" and which of the two fields at Morehouse Farm Park the game is to be played on...check out the links (and I don't mean golf)!  WILD THINGS game results only listed below--all games are at Morehouse Farm Park (Field 2 or 4)...2005 Slow-Pitch Softball Season week #2...on the left, the pond at Bisceglie--it is to open again for the summer of '05.  Center, the Little League Fields at Bisceglie (in place of picnic tables - old photo at right).
IDEAS:
Put garbage cans closer to fields at Morehouse Farm Park/ DONE;
For the town - need to establish replacement funds for artificial fields (planning for the future [which may come around sooner than one would think]):  School Road artificial fields for soccer, field hockey (?), lacrosse, track and football - built with Town of Weston bonding, State grant and funds raised by Sports Complex group...will money for replacement turf appear in Town Budget for FY 2005-2006 (YES, IT IS THERE)?
Establish systematic procedures for use of Park (does and don't) to protect purity of groundwater and protect the Saugatuck Reservoir/ DONE at September 1, 2005 Board of Selectmen's meeting - there is now a Special Committee including members from WWHD, CTDEP chaired by Weston Parks and Rec Director that will come up with a plan to balance needs of recreation with those of the environment (so these two important things can learn to play well together).  This matter has been discussed in executive session as the agreement between the State of CT and Weston to stop claims and lawsuits and just make things work out for the aforesaid receation and environmental interests.

News for "Wild Things" farm team!!!
OFF-SEASON...new blood for "Wild Things" in the form of Harleigh Paige.  Our future third-base-person arrived on May 21, 2009 in the late afternoon;  weighing in at at 7 pounds 30 ounces and keeping her eye on the ball even in the beginning!!!

Harleigh hopes that she will be eligible to play soon with the Champion Wild Things - she is practicing her slide into home for future game situations in the photo above...my how she is growing and getting soooooo alert!

News for "Wild Things" farm team!!!
OFF-SEASON...new blood for "Wild Things" in the form of Tatum Ruth (sister of Camden Thomas).  Our future centerfielder arrived on March 1, 2006 just before midnight;  weighing in at a hefty 4 pounds, 14 ounces Tatum "big bat" Cocker will throw lefty, we think (check out photo below)!

Herself, Tatum Ruth.

Tatum is playing in Weston this year.  Not only that, but she can bring along friends from out-of-town - probably up to 5, but she doesn't really know that many folks in Fairfield County yet who can swing a bat or run the bases like Mommy!!!  Stay tuned to schedule (probably twice a week) and thank you Louise our sponsor again!!!

From Winter 2004-2005 - hello to Camden Thomas!

Wild Things Party for Camden Thomas and friends in December 2004...Camden Thomas arrived and to be joined in the off season by a playmate-to-be;

Who could forget this group?  What other team's pitcher could throw a triple-header...that's right, three games in the same day!!!  Or how about coming from behind to wrap up a tight, one run victory (and then having to play yet ANOTHER game against a fine "Peter's SPIRITS" squad)?

NOTE:  Co-Captains Lisa and "BL" (not shown, either taking the picture herself or...out delivering a wedding cake [?]);  please click here for more of YR2000 crew and blow-ups of '99 and '96 team photographs--"BL" is shown here, the redhead in the center, third blue shirt to the right, or the left, front row!

1996 UNDEFEATED FIRST PLACE TEAM...MAYBE THE GREATEST EVER...
WILD THINGS 1996- Remember "Sister Mary" in full habit?  Of the twelve players shown in blue shirts, only six remained to play in 1999... Did you know that Weston Pharmacy was our sponsor years ago?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*Double-Elimination Tournament coming to an end - down to the final two teams (not WILD THINGS, unfortunately, see notes above):
TUESDAY, August 2nd, the Columbus Gym team played Peter's Spirits--back to the wall for Columbus Gym, having been beaten Monday by Peter's Spirits--Columbus Gym revives and forces another contest...with First Selectman in the crowd...FINAL GAME WEDNESDAY EVENING!

Regular Season 2005:    4 wins, 4 losses (2 games rained out)

Game one - against 20-30-40, Thursday. June 23 - W (21-5); Camden Thomas WILD THINGS youngest cheerleader - he made the difference in our first game against 20-30-40 Somethings, along with other young WILD THINGS in training!!!

Game two - against Weed Wackers, Monday, June 27 - W (24-21: called because of darkness).  It was reported to the website that...it was a great game with 2004 Champion Weed Wackers - everyone hit well (on both teams) and we were ahead when darkness fell.  Congratulations to both teams for knowing when enough is enough...next time we may not be ahead when the game gets called...as they say, that's the way the ball bounces!

Game three - against Jailbirds, Tuesday, June 28 - called off by Parks and Rec @4pm (fields must have been really wet and slippery).

Game four - against 20-30-40, Wednesday, June 29 - rain out?

Game five - against Peter's Spirits, Thursday, July 7 - close game, but we lost, 13-8.

Game six - against Weed Wackers, Monday, July 11 - close game but we won, 12-7.

Game seven - against Columbus Gym, Tuesday, July 12 - we lost, 12-2, or 2-12, but game was tied or only a one-run deficit until late innings--when out fly balls (or ground balls) went straight into opponents gloves, like they were magnetized!  But the hots dogs were great and the rain held off!!!  Girls Babe Ruth League held State Finals on Firld #3, right next door!

Game eight - against Jail Birds, Monday, July 18 - we lost on a hot, sticky night with thunderboomers in the distance (the game went the full 7 innings);  Jail Birds much improved!

Game nine - against Columbus Gym, Tuesday, July 19 - we played a great game all around, but lost, 6-3 to Columbus Gym (they were actually getting nervous).

Game ten - against Peter's Spirits, Thursday, July 21 - what a way to finish off the season...we beat Peter's Spirits 11-9!  Inspired play by all!!!
